This is a special topic workshop will focus on wildland fire, using Project Learning Tree's activity bundle Nature of Fire. Participants will assess stages succession following a disturbance in ecosystems, examine how fire is being used to restore historical ecosystems, investigate the fire triangle and fire movement, explore carbon outputs from wildland fires and how these relationships affect climate, and observe the effects of fire at the workshop site.  This workshop is an excellent opportunity for educators to tie in wildlife/prescribed fire when teaching about Energy Conservation and Transfer (3.P.3, 5.P.3, 6.P.3, PSc.3.1.1), Ecosystems (3.L.2, 4.L.1, 5.L.2), Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (6.L.1, ), and Earth Systems and Processes (7.E.1, EEn.2.1.4, EEn.2.5, EEn.2.6). Natural Resources Professionals that use prescribed fire are also highly encouraged to attend to gain resources and techniques to help teach visitors and the public about the use of fire across the landscape.

CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program. All program participants will receive a copy of the Nature of Fire activity bundle, which focuses on grades 6-8 but is highly adaptable for a variety of audiences. Note: this workshop is not distributing the PLT K-8 flagship guide, Explore Your Environment.

By registering for this professional development workshop, all participants are agreeing to adhere to all COVID protocols as outlined by the workshop facilitators, workshop location, and state guidelines at the time of the workshop.

If the cost of this workshop is a barrier for you, please reach out to the the NC PLT Coordinator, Renee Strnad, at renee_strnad@ncsu.edu.
