Developing skills to become a successful young adult
At Extension, we strive to equip youth with the skills they need to become leaders in our community—focusing on everything from daily responsibilities to job readiness and leadership development. The mission of the Everyday Essentials program is to ensure young people can transition smoothly into adulthood and become active, engaged members of our communities.
Everyday Essentials is a six-week program designed for youth ages 13-18, with maximum impact achieved by participants who attend all sessions.

How to Register
You can now sign up for the Everyday Essentials program via 4-H Online — no prior club membership required!
By registering, your child will be enrolled in all six sessions, so please ensure they are available to attend each one.

Everyday Essentials Program Schedule
Session One: Introduction to Cooking (Cooking 101)
In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to choose and use the right kitchen tools, plan meals ahead of time, and maintain a healthy eating style—all while preparing and tasting your first guided recipe as you take steps toward greater independence.
Class Date: September 30th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session Two: How to Shop Smart (Cooking 102)
Once you’ve discovered the recipes you enjoy, it’s time to stock your pantry! In this session of Everyday Essentials, you’ll learn how to keep your pantry filled with staple ingredients, how to read nutrition labels to make healthier choices, and explore different cooking methods to expand your skills in the kitchen.
Class Date: October 7th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session Three: Understanding Your Finances (Finance 101)
As you begin earning your first paycheck, it’s important to understand how to manage your money wisely—from creating a budget to understanding credit and debt. In this session, you’ll learn the basics of personal finance and set individual financial goals, helping you build healthy spending habits before you take on monthly expenses.
Class Date: October 14th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session Four: Money in the Real World (Finance 102)
Now that you understand the basics of money management, it’s time to apply those skills to real-world situations. In this session, you’ll step into a career field and learn how to prepare for taxes, handle unexpected expenses, and manage monthly bills like phone payments, groceries, and insurance.
Class Date: October 21st, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session Five: Civic Engagement
Do you know where your taxes go? In this session, you’ll dive into the world of local government to learn about the services funded by taxes, how decisions about spending are made, and how you can play a role in shaping those decisions in your community.
Class Date: October 27th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Session Six: Leadership & Job Preparedness
As you prepare to enter the workforce, it’s essential to know how to build a strong resume, write an effective cover letter, and develop the skills that will help you stand out in an interview. In this session, you’ll explore key leadership qualities, draft a resume tailored to your dream job, and craft a cover letter designed to make a lasting impression.
Class Date: November 4th, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
