Gather all your friends and family and enjoy a pleasant autumn day during the 29th annual Art in the Arboretum! This festival will take place at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, New Hanover County Center and Arboretum on October 11 and 12. New to the festival, the Youth Arts Center will display art from local non-profit organizations and offer activities for the whole family to enjoy!
Connect with New Hanover County 4-H and partake in a “Seed Bomb” activity. Wondering what a Seed Bomb is? It’s a small ball made from compost, clay, and seeds. Youth will have the opportunity to create their own seed ball to take home and place in their own garden. Then, with their family, they can plant seeds together!
Also featured in the Youth Arts Center is the limitless imagination of the youth participants from DREAMS of Wilmington, as well as Kids Making It.
The mission of DREAMS of Wilmington is to cultivate a culture of confidence for youth and teens through equal access to art education supported by the values of family and community. The DREAMS programs serve over 600 youth per year, not only through their in-house classes but also through outreach programs throughout the community.
For Art in the Arboretum, DREAMS participants will create and sell visual art, including paintings, canvases, and photography. DREAMS Director of Youth Operations commented, “We hope people see the kids and how joyful they are that they get to showcase their art and share it with people outside of their immediate family and the Dreams community.” For each piece sold, the children will get 100% of the commission.
Kids Making It, an after-school woodworking program, will also be participating in the Art in the Arboretum. All youth participating in the art show will bring a variety of woodwork pieces that they’ve personally created. Some of these projects will be coasters, cutting boards, charcuterie boards, trays, candle holders, ornaments, pens, and bottle stoppers. Julie Phillips, Kids Making it Associate Director, feels, “We would love for the community to see the amazing work that our kids do. We want to just get the word out about our programs and services.” Like the DREAMS organization, Kids Making It is focused on helping boost the children’s confidence. They seek to instill a sense of pride in the work that has been developed and accomplished.
This show promises to be an impressive exhibition of creativity, demonstrating that innovation transcends age. Attendees can expect vibrant colors, remarkable imagination, and a genuinely uplifting experience. Here’s to the next generation of artists!
We invite you to enjoy this exciting new addition to Art in the Arboretum, and then further immerse yourself in local art by joining the festivities in the garden for $5 at the gate. Children under the age of 12, veterans, and Friends of the Arboretum enter free.
