Collapse ▲During this time of year, many of us are decorating the indoors and outdoors for the holidays. And as the temperatures drop, it can be difficult to get outside and connect with nature, especially with the young people in our lives.
Engaging in a hands-on activity can help foster connection and encourage time in the outdoors.
Creating bird-seed ornaments is a simple, engaging, and natural craft! It will not only be fun for the whole family but also help you decorate your gardens, yards, porches, or patios to provide food for birds during the winter season.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of birdseed
- 1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin
- 2 tablespoons of cold water
- ⅓ cup of boiling water
- Cookie Cutters
- Baking sheet
- Tin foil
- Twine or yarn
- Pointy object such as a needle or seam ripper
Instructions:
- To begin, combine your gelatin and cold water and let sit for one minute.
- Next add in your boiling water and stir until the gelatin is dissolved.
- Now, your bird-seed can be added and be sure to stir the mixture until fully combined.
- Lay out your cookie cutters on a non-stick surface and fill each one with the bird-seed mixture.
- Be sure to press each one down firmly into the mold.
- Refrigerate overnight and the next day, once the ornaments have come back to room temperature, gently remove from the molds.
- The last step is to make a hole using a pointy object, pull the string through, and tie a loop.
We hope you enjoy this easy and sustainable craft this holiday season!
