Food Bank & Food Pantries

Food Bank Talking Councils

Nutrition and Food Safety are taught as part of the Food Bank Talking Councils, hosted by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC and available for all food bank partners. These classes help staff and volunteers of local food pantries, soup kitchens, back-pack programs, etc. learn about how to handle food safely for their clients and also about nutrition for themselves and their clients. Understanding how to make healthy choices, knowing what foods can be substituted in recipes, and encouraging healthy foods helps reduce the amount of wasted food and helps our citizens grow stronger and healthier. We also use these talking councils as a way to share about other resources we can offer through Extension. This includes taste tests (more information below), information about setting up a client-choice model, and nudging to encourage healthy eating.

Food Pantry Taste Tests

Taste tests are offered at food pantries in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties. The goal is to help food pantry clients try healthy recipes that use common ingredients found at a food pantry and to learn how to prepare less common ingredients so they aren’t wasted. We also work to procure more fresh produce that can be donated and used in the taste tests. Some of our pantry partners offer a “bundle” of the ingredients from the recipe being tested so that families can leave from the pantry ready to make the recipe for that night’s dinner!
