The Carolyn Stanley Barnes and George Edward Barnes 4-H Graduate Education Scholarship has been established by retired Vance County Extension 4-H Agent Carolyn Stanley Barnes and her husband, George Edward Barnes, to provide a graduate education scholarship to a 4-H professional. This scholarship has been designed to provide support to graduate students who are currently working as 4-H Extension professionals (Extension Agents, Program Assistants or Program Associates).

Carolyn Stanley Barnes has spent her entire life associated with the 4-H program, first in Mississippi where she was named a national winner in health. After graduating from college, she joined the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service (now Cooperative Extension) as a 4-H agent. During her tenure as the manager of the Vance County 4-H Program, she mentored and coached numerous youth who excelled as District and State Officers and project and presentation winners. She developed an outstanding leadership program for teens and became a certified instructor of the Kauffman Institute’s “Mini Society.” After her retirement, Carolyn has continued to train for the Kauffman program throughout the country.

George Edward (Ed) Barnes graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After many years of service, he retired as an Engineering Manager at Lucent Technologies. Since retirement, he has pursued several private ventures. His first association with 4-H was through his daughter and two granddaughters who were/are 4-H members. More recently, he became reacquainted with the North Carolina 4-H Program when he met and married Carolyn Stanley.

Ed and Carolyn are outstanding volunteers for the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund.
