Opportunities abound for gardeners to learn in 2024! NC State Extension in Henderson County, Bullington Gardens and other organizations will be providing classes covering a variety of home gardening topics in the new year. NC State Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center Agent Steve Pettis is a plant health expert and pest management specialist. Steve will be teaching his gardening classes at Bullington Gardens in 2024.

Mountain Mushrooms (sold out!) January 23, 2024 – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast, will teach attendees about basic fungal biology, how to grow mushrooms at home, and the top wild mushrooms to collect in the forest.

Shiitake mushroom taste good and are healthful.

Spring Ephemeral Flowers, Mosses and Ferns May 2, 2024 – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast, will discuss the many flowers that grow in the Spring time in the forests of Western North Carolina. He will discuss some of the most common spring ephemeral plants’ biology, their pollinators and some of the interesting history of these special plants as well as mosses and ferns.

Bonsai June 6, 2024 – 2-4 p.m.

Bonsai is the ancient art of dwarfing trees. The goal is to create in miniature a tree that looks like a mature tree in a pot. The word bonsai literally means ‘plant in a tray’. The concept is simple; restrict the growth of a plant’s roots and shoots, allowing the trunk to grow. The end result is a plant that appears to be a miniature representation of its relatives in the wild. Join NC State Horticulture Agent Steve Pettis to learn how to create bonsai trees.

Gardening for Pollinators – (with a garden walk)July 11, 2024 – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast, will discuss the importance of beneficial insects and pollinators and how to garden for their benefit. Then Steve will lead a pollinator walk through the Bullington Garden grounds.

The Secret Lives of TreesAugust 8, 2024 – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Steve Pettis, Henderson County Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast, will talk about the importance of Western North Carolina’s tree canopy, tree health, tree care and more.

A contiguous tree canopy creates habitat for wildlife, cools the air, moderates the climate, cleans pollutants from the air, captures rainwater to prevent flooding, produces oxygen, captures carbon dioxide and generally makes people feel better.

Pollinating insects such as native bees, wasps, beetles and flies are critical to native plant reproduction and to our food supply but these workhorses of the insect world are under threat from land use changes, pesticides and habitat loss. The great news is that you can make a difference by dedicating a part of your landscape to the plants that feed and shelter pollinators. Steve will teach you how to make your yard and garden a pollinator paradise!
