Bridging the Food Insecurity Gap

— Written By Morgan McKnight

The N.C. Cooperative Extension of New Hanover County is partnering with Farmer Food Share of Durham, NC to offer an exciting program for volunteers, farmers markets, and food pantDonation Stationries. Donation Stations will make their appearance at the Tidal Creek Farmers Market and the Poplar Grove Farmers Market on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays and 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, respectively from April to September.

Donation Stations are a great way for the community to engage in supporting local food and food security efforts. At each market, Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers will host a table where market attendees can purchase fresh produce from farmers/vendors and donate it to the Donation Station. Customers can also offer monetary donations that will then be used for purchasing the fresh produce from farmers/vendors. At the end of each market, local food pantries will be given all of the fresh produce to donate to their pantry clients. This program allows farmers to receive asking price for their products while also offering high-quality produce to food pantry clientele.

You can get involved by visiting one of our participating markets and donating to our Donation Station OR by volunteering at the Donation Stations at Tidal Creek or Poplar Grove! To volunteer, sign up here: Donation Stations ILM
