Registration Open for Healthy Living Food Series

“Healthy Living…From the Ground Up!” is an upcoming food series that will be hosted in New Hanover County at the Cooperative Extension office at the Arboretum. The series will contain three parts – each their own mini-series – that will educate consumers about different aspects of the home food system through interactive lessons and demonstrations.

The classes will cover the areas of production, processing, preparation and consumption, and waste recovery.

The first mini-series will cover processing through home food preservation including an intro to canning, drying and freezing, boil water bath canning, and pressure canning. The second mini-series will cover preparation and consumption through a Mediterranean nutrition and cooking class including basic cooking techniques and learning how to eat a healthy, balanced diet. The third mini-series will cover production and waste recovery through container gardening, beer making & pairing, and composting. Dates of the class and registration information follows:

Home Food Preservation

Processing

Dates:

  • July 24th – Intro to Canning
  • July 31st – Drying & Freezing
  • August 7th – Boil Water Bath Canning
  • August 14th – Pressure Canning

Times: 6pm-8pm

Location: NHC Arboretum (6206 Oleander Dr, Wilmington, NC 28403)

Cost: $15/class, $50 for all four; payment includes basic canning kit equipment and materials for class; snacks will be provided

Registration Information: Call the NHC Arboretum (910-798-7660) to register; spot is reserved once payment is received; first class is required for all other classes; no refunds available.

  • August 24th – Swap Your Fat; Snack on Nuts & Seeds
  • August 31st – Eat More Fruits, Veggies, & Whole Grains
  • September 7th – Rethink Your Sweets

  • July 27th – Container Gardening, 6-8pm
  • September 18th – Composting, 6-8pm
  • October 14th – Beer making and pairing, 1-4pm
