New Interactive Art Project at the Arboretum

— Written By Aiden Kenny

Multi-colored chalk on a blackboard now adorns a wall of the New Hanover County Arboretum, and visitors to the gardens can enjoy an interactive chalk wall where they may stop to write what they want to do before they die.

Before I Die is an interactive art project which encourages community members to share their personal ambitions in a public space. The first Before I Die chalk wall was created by a New Orleans artist, Candy Chang, in 2011. Chang did not know what would come from her idea, but she experienced many positive responses immiadetely. Today, over 1,000 Before I Die walls spread across the world.”

Wilmington’s new wall has a bucket of chalk attached for writing and it is a place where people can display their hopes and dreams as a community.

The Arboretum is free and open to the public seven days a week from dawn till dusk.
