Notes from the Leader of Cooking Class

Hey guys, its Rick just wanting to go over some of the cool things that
have been happening with the development of cooking club recently.
We had a meeting Monday night where a few neat things happened.

We held officer elections for President and Secretary, so now we have a
full cabinet of officers.
Our Officer Board is as follows:
President: Robert
Secretary: Huston
Treasurer: Tres

Vice President: Ryan

President Elec: Rachel

I can't wait to meet with you guys and talk about the cool things
happening this year.

All of our classes will fill your bellys and your minds.
In preperation of the Nutrition class, the kids were assigned food
journals for three days.  They are writing down everything they eat
and drink(as well as vitamins) for three days sometime in the next week
and a half.  We will use these journals in class on the 28th.

In Future events we will be in the process of planning spring field
trips to:
A local restauraunt to learn about the inner workings of a real
kichen and what the word Chef really means.
Mikes Farm to explore a working farm environment.
A local Organic Goat and Bee Honey Farm to learn about organic
farming and what the whole thing is all about.

I also am lining up professional guests to make appearances in our
classes this year.  And don't forget about District Activity Day,
State Congress, and A Summer of Good Eats.

If you have any questions about anything you see here email me or Aimee
or call me anytime.

'Energy Calculator' Could Help Kids Balance Diet, Exercise

Although counting calories is generally not advised or necessary for healthy children, developing an understanding of energy needs could help children keep their food choices in perspective and balanced with physical activity.  Click here to calculate your child’s energy needs.

How do you know if your child is eating too much?

You feed your child all of his/her meals but do you really know what your child is eating?  This is a great way to start a nutrition make over for the whole family.   Children copy what the parents eat.  They best way to ensure a healthy child is to create a healthy lifestyle change for the whole family.  Start today by clinking here for a daily nutrition log.  Write down everything you eat for the week including the portion sizes.  After the week is over ask yourself these questions;

  1. How many different kinds of fruits/vegetables did we eat?
  2. Did we have more then one desert a day?
  3. Did we exercise at least 30 minutes a day for adults and a hour a day for children.
  4. Do we intake enough vitamins? (Calcium, Vitamin D, C, Iron)
  5. Did we eat the right amount of everything according to the food guide pyramid?

If you answered no to one of these questions try to slowly change your eating habits.  Children can be molded in to the healthy eaters that you would like to be but you need to start early.  I believe every parent should watch super size me.  This documentary talk about nutrition and the harmful affects it is having on our children.

What is 4-H doing to help today’s children?

4-H cooking Class ~ They learn nutrition and how to cook.  The best way to get a child to eat vegetable is for them to cook them!  We will be having our next meeting at the Arboretum Kitchen on January 14th from 5-7pm.  We are currently taking new children for this class.

Sports and Nutrition Summer Camp~ Every summer we offer a week long camp.  Here children learn different sports and activities

4-H Shooting Sports ~ This club gets children outdoors and in nature.  This is great for any child! We are currently taking new children for this.

During all camps and 4-H activities we serve healthy foods and drinks.  We hope to promote healthy life styles in there play in hopes they take the knowledge home and teach the family!

You’re Fitness Facts!

You have to know about your own fitness level before you make a plan to improve it.  Collect some information about your resting and aerobic heart rate, BMI, Flexibility, strength and endurance.

Record your data:

Checking your pulse:

  1. Find your pulse before you get out of bed in the morning.
  2. Using your right hand on the inside of you left wrist (or on your neck) count the number of beats in 30sec and double the number.
  3. Record you’re resting heart rate ___________________.Exercise should increase your heart rate (make it beat faster).  While you are exercising, stop and check your pulse periodically.  Your heart rate should stay elevated for 20 minutes.

Endurance:

Endurance is being able to keep exercising without tiring quickly.

To measure yours:

  1. Find your pulse from the above exercise.
  2.  Go to a stair case. Step up one stair with one foot and then the other foot, staying on the same step. Then step down one foot at a time. Count a load, "up, up, down, down." This is a one set.  Try to complete two of these sets every 5 seconds.
  3. Keep up this pattern for one minute, then sit and rest for one minute.  Take your pulse again after the one minute rest.

Record your pulse before and after.  What is the difference?  What does this mean?  If the difference is the same or less then you are in excellent shape, if its one or two beats faster then you are in fair shape, more then this and you need to exercise more!
